Videos

Make sure you have transcripts for your videos on SF.gov.

Videos cannot be hosted on SF.gov. That means they must be uploaded to a hosting platform like Granicus or YouTube before you can share them on SF.gov. It's not possible to upload a video file to SF.gov.

After you have uploaded video to a hosting platform, there are 2 ways you can share it on SF.gov:

  • Embed the video on a supported content type. This is only an option for YouTube videos.

  • Link to the video

Supported content types for YouTube embeds

2 content types can have video embeds:

  • Campaigns

  • Meetings

Only YouTube videos can be embedded.

Add a video

  • Find the Video component in the back end of the page.

    • On a Meeting page, look for Videos under Meeting resources

    • On a Campaign page, open Additional content, then select Video

The following fields will appear:

  • Video title

  • Describe what this video is about

  • Video type

  • Add a title for your video

  • Add a description

  • Add video type. Click on the plus sign under Video type. You'll see 2 options:

    • Choose External link for a video that is not on YouTube

    • Choose Embed for a YouTube video

When you choose External link, fields will appear for URL and Link text description.

Fill out those fields.

Embed

When you choose embed, fields will appear for Youtube URL and Video transcript.

  • Copy the full URL from the YouTube address bar. Do not use the short URL from the share button. It doesn't work for the embed!

  • Paste it into the Youtube URL field

  • Add a video transcript

There are several ways to get YouTube transcripts easily. You can Get a video transcript from YouTube, or use an external site like this one.
